What is YouTube?

BLOG

Introduction

A few people have said to me “You should not use YouTube in our volunteer works as UDEMKAURI.” and “I don’t like my kids to watch at Youtube.” I couldn’t understand the meaning at that time. Since then, I have researced YouTube and made me think what it is? Here, I’m ready to post about this topic for the first time, but not completed though. I’m happy if you enjoy!

1. Earnable?

This is the first thing we think at the first. The earnings of a YouTuber can vary greatly depending on several factors such as the number of views, engagement rate, and the type of ads displayed.

On average, a YouTuber earns between $0.01 and $0.03 per ad view, which translates to about $18 per 1,000 views. YouTubers receive 55% of their channels’ ad revenue, while Google takes 45%. (Helling, 2023)

However, these are just averages and actual earnings can fluctuate based on factors like the quality of traffic, source country, niche type of video, price of specific ads, adblock usage, and the actual click rate.

It’s also important to note that these figures are estimates, and the actual earnings can vary. For a more personalized estimate, there are online tools like the YouTube Money Calculator that can provide a more tailored estimate based on your specific channel details and performance.

Remember, being a successful YouTuber is not just about earning money. It’s also about creating content that you are passionate about and building a community around it.

Mr Beast’s motivation to become the biggest creator and make the best videos stems from his deep connection to the YouTube community, which shaped his identity and provided him with joy and friendship. (The Future of YouTube: What’s Next?, 2023)

2. Propaganda?

YouTube, as a platform for sharing and disseminating information, can be used as a tool for propaganda. Propaganda is a form of communication aimed at influencing the attitude of a community towards some cause or position.

In the digital age, a new form of “participatory propaganda” has emerged, which not only persuades users to interpret events through a particular lens but also manipulates relationships and creates isolation, both online and offline. This form of propaganda seeks to socialize conflicts and make them part of everyday life. (Asmolov, 2019)

YouTube has been identified as a major conduit of online disinformation and misinformation worldwide. It has been criticized for not doing enough to tackle the spread of falsehoods on its platform. For instance, it has been used to spread misinformation about Covid and the US presidential election. (Milmo, 2022)

Moreover, YouTube has been an important place for spreading Russian propaganda. Therefore, the relationship between YouTube and propaganda is significant, with YouTube serving as a platform for the dissemination of propaganda. (Perrigo, 2022)

As a user, it’s important to verify the information and think critically about the content consumed on platforms like YouTube. This can help to mitigate the impact of propaganda. UDEMAKURI keeps neutral position, off course.

3. Where will YouTube go to in future?

The future of YouTube seems to be focused on several key areas:

Supporting the Success of Creators: YouTube plans to continue prioritizing creators and artists, offering opportunities for them to grow their businesses on the platform. They are exploring more ways for creators to monetize their content, including expanding their subscriptions business, investing in shopping, and improving their paid digital goods offerings.

Building for the Future: YouTube is looking to evolve into an all-encompassing entertainment service, expanding beyond just videos and music to include games and interactive experiences. This is partly driven by YouTube’s evolution into a large catalogue of virtual reality content.

Protecting the Community: YouTube is committed to protecting its community and ensuring a safe environment for all users.

Emerging Technologies: YouTube is also considering the impact of emerging technologies like AI.

Please note that these are the stated priorities and plans from YouTube’s leadership as of 2023, and the actual future may vary based on a multitude of factors. (Mohan, 2023)

4. How wisely we should watch at YouTube?

Watching YouTube wisely involves a combination of critical thinking, careful selection of content, and use of the platform’s features. Here are some tips:

Verify the Source: Check the credibility of the channel or source providing the information.

Use Privacy Settings: YouTube offers features to clear your watch history or block specific channels.

Curate Your Subscriptions: Subscribe to channels that align with your interests and values. Regularly review your subscriptions and unsubscribe from channels that no longer resonate with you.

Use the “Not Interested” Feature: If YouTube recommends videos that don’t interest you, click the “Not Interested” button. This helps refine future recommendations.

Be Aware of the Algorithm: YouTube’s recommendation algorithm considers your viewing history. It suggests videos based on what you’ve watched before. Be mindful of this and explore diverse content to avoid getting stuck in a narrow bubble.

YouTube’s search algorithm prioritizes the following elements:
Relevance: The YouTube algorithm tries to match factors like title, tags, content, and description to your search query.
Engagement: Signals include watch time and watch percentage, as well as likes, comments, and shares.
Quality: To evaluate quality, the algorithm looks at signals to determine the channel’s authority and trustworthiness on a given topic.
User search and watch history: What have you enjoyed or viewed in the past? This will impact which search results the YouTube algorithm will assume will be helpful. (McLachlan et al., 2023)

Be Mindful of Time: It’s easy to lose track of time on YouTube. Set a limit for how long you want to spend on the platform. Autoplay can also lead to endless hours of watching. Consider disabling this feature.

Quality Over Quantity: Prioritize high-quality content over clickbait or sensational videos. Look for channels that provide valuable information, entertainment, or education.

Avoid Toxic Comments: Comments can provide additional perspectives and insights, but remember they can also be biased or inaccurate. YouTube comments can be a breeding ground for negativity. Focus on the video content rather than engaging in unproductive discussions.

Use the “Take a Break” Reminder: YouTube offers a feature that reminds you to take breaks after a certain amount of viewing time. Enable this to maintain a healthy balance.

Use Distraction-Free Tools: There are tools and extensions like DF Tube and ViewPure that can help provide a distraction-free YouTube experience.

Conclusion

In Japan, many young generations still want to become YouTuber. It’s good to try to use YouTube Money Calculator! It’s interesting to know how much your favorite YouTuber earn! Remember, YouTube can be a valuable resource for learning, entertainment, and connecting with others. Use it wisely, and enjoy the content that enriches your life! UDEMKAURI will keep making YouTube videos to advertise our events, but not to earn money, so far… Search “UDEMAKURI_TV” at first!
